When I want to discipline my daughter, I tell her I’m going to make her wear Crocs…she cries out in fear and falls right into line…
Can someone please tell me what is so great about Crocs? They are made of plastic, ugly as sin and must make your feet smell like hell…and they’re coming out with new styles and colors so everyone in your family can look like Minnie Mouse…
More trash, anyone? Or are they made of recycled something? Help?
???

In celebration of my daughter Scirocco’s victory in her school spelling bee, I proudly proclaimed “We’re going out to eat and you get to choose where!”
She chose…Applebee’s.
Applebee’s!
How does a child born at home, nursed for three years, Waldorf educated and raised on organic brown rice even know about these places of horror?
It took everything I had to not be the sword-wielding righteous supermom and not start ranting and raving about the genetically modified food, the hermetically sealed plastic pouches of artificially microwaved ingredients, the sugar laden, transfat folly of this American chain restaurant. For once, I wanted to allow her to make a choice without slamming it to the floor and grinding it down with my Northern Californian mom-who-knew-too-much mentality.
I wanted to compromise.
It took four visits from the waiter before I could even squeek out an order. By then she had already been served something vaguely resembling food.
So amidst free refills of her liquid crack beverage, er…”lemonade”…and satisfied choice of a Chinese Chicken Salad (animal torture!), I managed to make conversation about oh, everyday things like school and boys without hitting her over the head (again) with the tragedies of factory farming and the countless known and unknown diseases that are resulting from wrenching food production from Mother Nature and selling it to chemical companies.
I know she will grasp the importance of her food choices at some point, so would it hurt to let her “enjoy” a simple meal at the mall?
God only knows.
But today she’s getting brown rice.
